A training bullet from an active-shooter drill held earlier in the summer was found in Memorial Middle School in Hull on Wednesday, Aug. 30, and more rounds were discovered the following day, according to The Hull Police Department and Hull Public Schools.
A person discovered the first round while servicing a copier. The school was placed on a "short" lockdown "out of an abundance of caution." Police responded to the scene, determined the round's origin, and ended the lockdown.
On Thursday, a teacher found more bullets inside a plastic cup. The school was not placed on lockdown, however, because the rounds were recognizable as training bullets. The school resource officer and the lead police instructor for the active shooter training event swept the building on Thursday to ensure no other drill-related items were left behind.
The training rounds do not leave the gun's barrel to become a projectile, according to the Hull police and school district.
“The Hull Police Department and the Hull Public Schools would like to apologize to parents and students for any alarm this caused," the joint statement said. “We also want to stress that at no point were any students, teachers, or school personnel in danger."
The school department and police department plan to meet to prevent future such incidences from happening.
